Excel Keeps Deleting the Leading Zeros in My SKUs

Your SKU is 00127, Excel decides it is the number 127, and now the file no longer matches your warehouse.

Why it happens

Fix it in four steps

  1. Export one existing product from Shopify and use that file as the reference for column names.
  2. Open your supplier file in a plain-text editor and check whether commas inside values are quoted.
  3. Force identifier columns (SKU, barcode, handle) to text before exporting.
  4. Import five rows first. Only then run the full file.

Questions people ask

Why does "excel leading zeros sku csv" happen in the first place?

The header row does not match the field names the importer expects, so the file is read column by column into the wrong fields.

Can I fix it inside Shopify?

The importer validates the file; it does not repair it. The fix always happens in the spreadsheet or before the export.

How do I stop it happening again?

Import five rows first. Only then run the full file.
